The Curbside Prophet

My name is Alyssa Mae.

I am a mid-twenties avid intersectional feminist, advocate, fighter, counselor, and friend. I will be graduating from Bucknell University in May with degrees in Psychology and Women’s & Gender Studies. I work with survivors of sexual assault and other trauma, and I fix computers for a living.

I often blog about what it is like to live at the intersections of a few different mental illnesses, queerness, and sexuality, along with posts about sexism, racism, rape culture, and LGBT rights. There is a trigger warning for these on my entire blog. You will see posts about depression, eating disorders, PTSD, panic disorder, and fat activism. This has been my safe space for four years now, and I reserve the right to ask you to leave it if necessary.

Welcome to my life.

We’ve all looked on in horror at the Romney campaign and the horrific idea of the future of American women. Well now it’s happening to us.

Jeremy Hunt, our new health minister, is anti-abortion, as well as anti-stem cell research.

“In May 2008 in the abortion amendments to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill (now Act), Jeremy Hunt voted for the abortion time limit to be lowered to 12 weeks against scientific and medical consensus which is currently 24 weeks[4]. After four separate parliamentary votes on varying time limits, the majority of MPs voted to keep the abortion time limit at 24 weeks, in keeping with scientific and medical consensus, hence no abortion amendments were added to the bill. Hunt also voted on the same date to reduce to 16, and then 22 weeks as subsequent votes were defeated.

However he did vote against the motion on Prospects for life of handicapped child, which would have made it more difficult to abort a handicapped foetus.
