The Curbside Prophet

My name is Alyssa Mae.

I am a mid-twenties avid intersectional feminist, advocate, fighter, counselor, and friend. I will be graduating from Bucknell University in May with degrees in Psychology and Women’s & Gender Studies. I work with survivors of sexual assault and other trauma, and I fix computers for a living.

I often blog about what it is like to live at the intersections of a few different mental illnesses, queerness, and sexuality, along with posts about sexism, racism, rape culture, and LGBT rights. There is a trigger warning for these on my entire blog. You will see posts about depression, eating disorders, PTSD, panic disorder, and fat activism. This has been my safe space for four years now, and I reserve the right to ask you to leave it if necessary.

Welcome to my life.

Gluten free french bread is a success! Super delicious, good consistency, and nice flavor. The crust is so yummy.

Gluten free cupcakes and homemade buttercream icing.

I made vanilla meringues. They are so delicious.

We made cake.

Ghirardelli brownie with chocolate chips as the bottom layer with two layers of Duncan Hines Butter Golden cake. There is chocolate buttercream icing between layers and vanilla buttercream on the whole outside.

This isn’t my best iced cake, but the cake was suuuuper crumbly.

It’s easy to be a writer criticizing food critics and the banality of today’s popular restaurants to bring up the whole “eh, tipping needs to end” argument.  How easy it would be to just not tip your servers.  Then we’ll force the restaurant owners to pay them better! No.  We won’t get paid better.  We will get minimum wage to the penny, which is less than I earn now.  Also, if you stop tipping and make the servers pay go up to regular minimum wage do you know what will happen?  Your food costs will skyrocket.  Everything on the menu will triple in price.  Sure you won’t have to tip, but that burger just cost you $29.99 and to add bacon will toss in another $5. You know why?  Because, except for some little mom and pop places, the owners or restaurants are there to do one thing: PROFIT.

Yeah, it kind of sucks when societal pressure makes you tip at least 18%, but your meal cost would be a lot more expensive if you didn’t have to pay that server $5.
